History of surgical industry in Pakistan dates back more than 100 years, when some British doctors got their surgical instruments repaired from the skilled workers of Sialkot laying down the foundation of surgical instruments manufacturing in the City. Today there are more than ten thousand different medical, surgical, dental and beauty care instruments covering all areas of their respective fields, are being manufactured in Sialkot. Several local companies have now joined hands with world renowned multinationals and entered into joint ventures to manufacture and export international standard surgical instruments which are being used in all major hospitals of the world.

The Surgical Instruments Manufacturers Association of Pakistan was established in 1950 with an aim to protect, promote and develop the art of surgical instruments manufacturing in Silakot. With major initiatives in modern research and development, quality management systems, export marketing, international exhibitions and fairs the value of exports of surgical instruments from Sialkot has gradually increased to over USD-500 Million.

The Surgical Instruments Manufacturers Association of Pakistan has 3900 member firms, employing more than 150,000 workers to meet the export commitments for the international market.

The Surgical Instruments Manufacturers Association of Pakistan in joint collaboration with Trade Development Authority of Pakistan - TDAP is successfully managing Sialkot Material Testing Laboratory for more than a decade now. The Laboratory provides state of the art material testing facilities to the surgical manufacturers and exporters and is successfully and satisfactorily catering to the material and quality related requirements of the industry.
