National AIDS Control Programme - NACP was established in 1986-87 in collaboration with UN agencies, bilateral and multilateral donors and a consortium of NGOs. Working under the umberlla of National Institutes of Health, the main objectives of NACP are prevention of HIV transmission, safe blood transfusion, control and reduction of sexually transmitted diseases, training of health staff, research and behavioral studies.

The implementation of the Enhanced HIV-AIDS Control Program started in the year 2003 under the supervision of Directorate General of Health Services, the main programmatic coordination, implementation and monitoring arm of the provincial health department of the Government of Punjab. The main componenet of the Program is to provide comprehensive HIV treatment and care services for adults and pediatric cases including free antiretroviral therapy, management of opportunistic infections, voluntary counseling and testing, management of chronic care of HIV related infections, control of sexually transmitted diseases, prevention of parent to child transmission and blood safety.

Free of cost antiretroviral treatment and diagnostic services including HIV confirmation, baseline investigation, CD4 and viral load testing is provided to all HIV-Aids patients at the Aids Clinic - Dr. Ruth K.M. Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi. HIV-Aids is commonly transmitted through sexual intercourse and has no permenant cure. Antiretroviral treatment through lifelong HIV medicines can control the virus so that you can live a longer, healthier life and reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to others.
